ELECTRICAL POWER 2 EP-II 6TH SEMESTER DIPLOMA PSBTE MAY 2015 PAPER      

Duration : 3 Hrs                                                                                      M.Marks : 75   

                         SECTION A

      1. Fill in the blanks :

      i. ELCB stands for Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker.
      ii. A buchholz relay is used for the protection of Transformers.
     iii. Ground wire is used to protect transmission lines against lightning strokes or lightning strokes Accidents 
     iv. The filler material in HRC fuse is Plaster of Paris.
      v. The value of fusing factor is Greater always than one.
     vi. When all the three phases are short circuited, the fault is called Symmetrical Fault or Balanced Fault.
    vii. In time graded over current protection Time discrimination is incorporated. proportional it the load power.
   viii. The maximum KVA demand of a consumer is  Independent of the Power factor.
    ix. The basic principle applied in Murray loop test is Wheatstone bridge for fault location.                                                                                                                                        x. An induction type relay can be employed on ac (alternating current) system only.

Q2. Attempt any five questions.                                                 5×6=30

    i. Discuss two part tariff and calculate the annual energy cost for an industrial consumer taking a load of 300Kw for half hrs and 100 KW for seven hrs per day.                The consumer is charged at a rate of Rs.1000 per KW per annum plus Rs.1.50 per KWh.
   ii. Write a short note on static relays. Give their applications.
   iii. Differentiate between symmetrical and unsymmetrical faults.
   iv. Explain the working principle of circuit breakers with a schematic diagram.
    v. Explain protection of transmission lines & substations against over voltages due to lightning.
    vi. Discuss time-graded protection for radial feeders.
    vii. Discuss various faults that may occur in overhead transmission lines.

   Q3. Attempt any three questions.                                                                                    3×10=30

    i. What is a lightning arrestor? Give the requirements of a good lightning arrestor, Name various types and explain one of them in detail.
    ii. Enlist various protection schemes employed to protect a power transformer. Explain the working of a buchholz relay with the help of a neat sketch.
   iii. What is the purpose of a fuse? Discuss the construction, working and advantages of an H.R.C cartridge type fuse with the help of a neat sketch.
   iv. Explain with a neat sketch the construction & working of SF6 circuit breaker.
