h. A steel plate 75 mm wide and 10 mm thick is welded to a plate with lap joint having transverse welding. Find size of weld if the load is 55 KN and allowable stress in tension = 100 N/mm2.

1. Explain the design procedure.
2. Design a knuckle joint to transmit 150 KN. The design stress may be taken as 75 MPa in tension, 60 MPa in shear and 150 MPa in compression.
3. A solid steel shaft having ultimate shear stress 360 MPa and factor of safety as 8. It transmits 20 kW at 200 rpm. Find the diameter of the shaft. If the solid steel shaft is replaced with a hollow shaft, find its inside and outside diameter. The ratio of inside to outside diameter is taken as 0.5.
4. Design a flange coupling for a mild steel shaft transmitting 90 kW at 250 rpm. Allowable shear stress for mild steel = 40 MPa, for cast iron = 14 MPa and for bolt material = 30 MPa. The materials for shaft and key are same.
